Piqués …
Around the planet , for centuries , quilting has been a traditional art to embellish and transform fabric , giving weight , giving strength or giving a new life to fabric , preparing a warm blanket or a garment with layers of fabric , padding them or not , with carded unwoven cotton and wool …

In the process a myriad of amazing textiles have been created …
My hand block printing is renowned for its clarity and for that to be , I need to print on smooth fabric . The heaviest weave I use is a 40 count… a kind of percale , ideal for table linen but too light to turn it into a bed cover and do justice to our beautiful printing . Hence, I thought best would be to quilt our bed spreads the way French ladies did it in Provence . This particular quilting called “piqué” , is made of very fine stitches , fixing a thin layer of unwoven cotton between two layers of printed fabric .

I still use the splendid Jaipur quilting ( see our video on the site ) to prepare very light and cosy blankets called “razai” of cotton wool between two layers of muslin with looser stitches to allow air into the quilt , making it warmer .
